Took my hopeful Lemons racer to the Rocky Mountain Vintage Racing Fire and Rescue School last weekend. They used our car for extrication purposes, showing how to get drivers with helmets out of the car and onto a backboard. It was good to see how it would happen in our car, but basically, you’re screwed. If a fire happened, and the driver was unconscious, it would take too long, if you ask me.
Our racecar is the #30 you see here, a 1986 BMW 535i, with a strong M30 straight 6 engine.
It was a weekend class, in the classroom, we learned first aid techniques, communication protocol, flags, safety (your own safety is of primary importance), and fire extinguishers. With the class, you become qualified to work as a corner worker at the track.
We learned about pit and grid procedures, racing belts and HANS devices, and some differences between the various racing orgs, SCCA, PCA, NASA (which tend to have some flag and protocol variations). It was a good mix of Powerpoint, and hands on instruction.
The donuts and drinks were good, the instructors were professional and passionate, and the whole experience is highly recommended. If you ever have the chance to take the course, do so!
